But seriously folks...

The New Buffalo Board of Education has put the old high school/middle school building and campus up for sale to the highest bidder. It won't be cheap, however. The building has been appraised at $790,000.

Sealed bids are due in the superintendent's office by 2 p.m. Feb. 27. The board anticipates acting on the bids March 5.

School officials have considered alternatives for the buildings ever since district voters approved a bond issue to build a new high school/middle school in 1998. People who were reluctant to let go of the 64,642-square-foot building listed its hand-made tiles decorating the walls, real terrazzo floors, built-in wood and glass storage cabinets in every room, and other unusual architectural details.

A combination community recreation center and senior citizen center, a movie complex, and condominiums were all mentioned as possible uses.

For many months, it seemed possible the city of New Buffalo and New Buffalo Township might jointly buy the land and buildings for public use. Various funding packages were discussed at length, but the school's timetable and those of the municipalities did not jibe.

"We'll show the building over the next 40 days or so. (The bids) are due on a Tuesday so we'll have a few days to analyze the bids and meet with high bidder," Lindley said. "If there is a contingency we can't live with, we may not accept the bid. If we can live with it, we'll probably accept it at the next Monday school board meeting."
