Coaching legend Greene dies
Lofton Greene, the winningest high school basketball coach in Michigan history, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003 after a long illness. He was 84. For the past four years, Greene battled Shy-Drager Syndrome, a neurological disorder characterized by excessive drops in blood pressure that cause dizziness or momentary blackouts. He coached at New Buffalo before taking over at River Rouge (Detroit) in 1942. Greene finished with a record of 739-231.
