Opening of New Buffalo School DelayedNew Buffalo On Feb. 5, the New Buffalo Board of Education unanimously voted to move to the new middle/senior high school this summer, delaying once again the move that was originally scheduled to take place over Christmas break. In a letter to the Editor of The Herald Palladium, Charles Heit, the President of the Board of Education explained... "We regret that this decision had to be made. However, we believe it is the right decision. The board is of the opinion that the new school should not be occupied until it is 100 percent safe and conducive to learning. Despite the fine efforts of many capable contractors and subcontractors, it has become apparent that the general contractor will not be able to meet these criteria by spring break. No one wants more than the board to move into the new school and begin enjoying its many benefits. But overriding our wishes is our obligation to act in the best interests of the community and to assure that taxpayers get the quality school for which they voted and are paying. Since the beginning of this major construction project, we have had construction professionals, working on our behalf in conjunction with the administration and the board's Building and Grounds Committee, to oversee the work to make sure it meets the standards specified in the plans. Since last fall we have had a construction representative on-site full time. We have rejected some work, required some areas to be redone and we still have issues that cannot be resolved until the weather improves. The board pledges to maintain its vigilance to assure this community gets the quality school it deserves. On behalf of the board, I would like to thank the students, parents, teachers, staff and members of the community for their patience and support. Working together, we will accomplish our ultimate goal of a quality educational facility of which the entire community will be proud."
