Endowment Remembers Late New Buffalo Banker Larry Bubb

NEW BUFFALO - A new endowment for Harbor Country in memory of Larry G. Bubb, former president of Alliance Banking Co. in New Buffalo, has received a $20,000 match from the Berrien Community Foundation.

More than 90 gifts from residents and businesses in the Harbor Country area have donated and pledged more than $70,000 for the endowment, according to an announcement from the foundation.

The match was made possible through the foundation's "Give Where You Live" program that awards up to $20,000 for communities when they raise a minimum of $40,000 from local gifts.

The foundation is working with Hillary Bubb, Larry's widow, and Todd Gillette of Alliance Banking Co. to establish the Larry Bubb Harbor Country Advisory Council. The council would review requests for funds from the endowment.

A portion of the endowment will support annual scholarships for local school students. Additionally, grants will be available for many different organizations and programs as long as they serve the needs of residents living within the Harbor Country area.

"For years, Larry dreamed of establishing a foundation for Harbor Country that would provide long-term support of charitable services," said Hillary Bubb. "As president of the Berrien Community Foundation from 1996 through 1998, Larry was clearly aware of the needs in our community and he believed one of the best ways to support the community was through a community-based endowment in partnership with the Community Foundation."

Gillette, chairman of Alliance Banking Co., said Alliance has made a significant financial commitment to help the endowment grow over the next few years. "We hope our gift will be used as an incentive to other businesses and individuals who want to do something really good for the community," Gillette said.

More information about how to donate to, or receive grants from, the Larry Bubb Harbor Country Endowment may be obtained by contacting the Berrien foundation at 983-3304 or 800-593-5411.
