ALUMNI IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Keith Killingbeck – New Buffalo High School Class of '68

In the fall of '68, Keith packed his bags and went to West Lafayette, Indiana attending Purdue University where he majored in Biology.

[ His advice to others has been to "simply to discover what it is you really enjoy learning about, and continue that learning the rest of your life." ]

Keith practices what he preaches. In 1976 he earned his Ph.D from the University of North Dakota (a logical progression from VP of the NBHS Biology Club). He then knocked around a few years doing research and post-doctorial studies at the Kansas State University. But finally found a home at the University of Rhode Island. Since 1979, Keith has been a professor and researcher with the URI Department of Biological Sciences, focused on the ecology and physiology of plant nutrient dynamics in a wide variety of ecosystem types.

Keith and his wife Susan (also a Biology major) have two children Brent and Laura. In his spare time, he still enjoys boyhood escapes like fishing, hiking and sports, but has added canoeing, backpacking, landscape, nature photography and writing to his list (he's been published 40 times).
